چکیده
acrylamide gel. A highly active substance was isolated by ion-exchange chromatography on a 5 % cross-linked polymer ofacrylamide, NN'-methylenebisacrylamide and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate. 2. The initial gel-filtration experiments were carried out under a wide variety of conditions and resulted in the same yield of high-molecularweight and low-molecular-weight fractions with inotropic activity. 3. It was concluded that it was unlikely that the low-molecular-weight fraction with inotropic activity was an artifact produced from the plasma proteins by the method of isolation. 4. The inotropic activity of the isolated substance was destroyed by incubation with protease. The authors acknowledge the technical assistance of Miss S. Freame and Miss J. Harris. They are also indebted to Mr S. Hart and Mr J. Bremner for advice on and help with the construction of chromatographic apparatus.

Alteration in the Collagen Content of the Human Uterus during Pregnancy and Post Partum Involution
Quantitative collagen determinations demonstrate an increase of approximately 800 per cent in the collagen content of the human uterus at term as compared with the non-pregnant state. Following parturition, there is a rapid resorption of collagen. The amount of collagen which disappears from the post partum uterus is approximately 53 gm. By the 8th day post partum, the human uterus has lost app...
متن کاملTotal, latent and active collagenase during the course of post-partum involution of the rat uterus. Effect of oestradiol.
1. Total, active and latent collagenase activities were determined by direct assay of tissue homogenates. 2. The rate of collagen breakdown during post-partum involution of the rat uterus is correlated with the total activity of collagenase. Both are low at parturition, reach a maximum within 24h and fall slowly to low values of 5 days post partum. This temporal correlation strongly supports th...
متن کاملInhibition by oestrogen of collagen breakdown in the involuting rat uterus.
1. Both the post-partum involution of the rat uterus and the rapid breakdown of collagen that accompanies it are extensively inhibited by oestrogenic hormones. In the normal rat, 85% of the uterine collagen is degraded within 4 days after parturition; in rats treated with 100mug. of 17beta-oestradiol/day, only 35% of uterine collagen is broken down in the same period. 2. Similar effects are pro...
متن کاملOestradiol inhibits collagen breakdown in the involuting rat uterus.
1. The earlier observation (Woessner, 1969) of oestradiol inhibition of collagen breakdown is confirmed and extended. Administration of 100mug of oestradiol-17beta/day to parturient rats strongly inhibits the loss of collagen from the involuting uterus. Three experiments show that this effect is due to an inhibition of collagen degradation rather than to a stimulation of collagen synthesis. 2. ...
متن کاملClearance of dying cells accelerates malignancy
The breast endures vast changes during reproductive phases of a woman's life (puberty, pregnancy, lactation, post-partum involution, post-menopausal involution). Each phase uniquely shapes cancer susceptibility, formation, and progression. Although pregnancy at a young age decreases lifetime breast cancer risk, the first five years following pregnancy at any age are associated with increased br...
